Action Plan to Maximize Academic Language in Development for 7th CTE
1. We continue to practice defining key words (fill-in-the-blank or matching) as guided notes activities, but I will try having students to interact with each other in small groups of 4 to practice using key words.
For example, using Newrow breakout rooms or Engageli tables with the directive that students talk about "clusters" covered thus far in CTE and the "pathways" we explored this week in Arts, Audio-Visual Technology, and Communication. This would engage students in higher thinking as they would be demonstrating that they know what a "cluster" and "pathway" are and how they differ. I would include a graphic of cluster-pathway and a chart of the clusters covered over the semesters to help facilitate conversation.
2. The Press Room activity explained on pg. 33 of "Maximizing Language Development in Lessons" works perfectly with our content of Journalism & Broadcasting in Communications. Students can create a news or radio broadcast with classmates. Students could interview each other and present their "findings" to other classmates in a small 4-student group setting. Optionally, students could present the news/radio broadcast or interviewee information (with student permission) to the class. This activity would engage both language and content in a meaningful (&, hopefuly, enjoyabe) way.
I love those infographics and how you're adapting what we're learning to your class--I worry about you a bit since your role is so unique! How will you model newspaper or broadcast language for your students to help them sound more like journalists and also elevate their use of academic language?
