Contemplating the results of the activities today, consider what these objectives mean for your instruction. How will you start incorporating them into your CCs and assignments? Language Objective and what does it mean instructionally?

I try to be intentional with new vocabulary. Students may have heard these terms before, but they are "new" in the sense that we are connecting the terms with associated careers. The objective is for students to recognize 2 terms, so I need to devise a way for students to grasp what these terms mean so we define, simplify, and engage. I include examples and demonstrate how to complete and submit assignments.

For example, in Journalism & Broadcasting, we learn what journalism and broadcasting mean by reading the Oxford dictionary definition. Then, a student or I simplify.

Once students grasp both terms, they "become" journalists and/or broadcasters using any topic that interests them. When possible, I try to give students the freedom of applying what they enjoy to assignments.

Journalism- noun. the activity or profession of writing for newspapers, magazines, or news websites or preparing news to be broadcast.

"She began a career in journalism with The New York Times."

Simplified- collect information and share it; journals were like diaries you wrote in and could share, so journalism is sharing written information.

Broadcast- verb. transmit (a program or some information) by radio or television.

"The announcement was broadcast live through the iHeart radio app."

Simplified- think of fishing where you cast or fling your lure and hope to get a broad area of fish; sending out info to a lot of people over the radio or news.

Engagement Assignment (Your Choice- Pick One)

Be a Journalist! If you could interview anyone, who would you interview? Why? List 2 questions you'd ask this person. (3 sentence response)

Example: If I could interview anyone, it would be The Rock. I think he is a funny actor and he used to wrestle. I would ask him how he started in wrestling and acting.

Broadcast the News! Upload your typed response or Using the Record function, record an audio or video clip of you presenting the weather for your area. (3 sentence response or less than 1 minute clip)

Example: Welcome to my weather forecast! It's sunny and freezing cold at 35 degrees in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Some days will be 60, but then we drop back down to the 30s.

  1. Hi there! I love your fishing example of how you explain what "broadcast" means! I also love to see how you are taking what you're learning and incorporating it into your instruction!
